Hatchet, lead by Christina Obuch, is a textile studio that creates handmade production for home decor and accessories, in Oakville, Ontario. The company was founded in 2012 to showcase the owners’ unique findings, using aspects of nature as inspiration. Hatchet focuses on shapes, colours and textures when designing new collections using plant based/ solvent free materials.
Christina currently works out of her home studio in Oakville, Ontario where she focuses on silk-screening, natural dying and embroidery. Christina completed her studies in Textile Design at Sheridan College in 2012. Through her education she explored wildlife, imitating texture and colour that the earth provides. She is the recipient of the the Oakville Sewing Center Award in 2011 and the Telio & Cie Award in 2012 for academic achievement. Some of her work has been displayed at Gallery 1313, Propeller Gallery and the Sheridan College Gallery.
She gained her love for making from her family, which has a creative history ranging from textiles to furniture. Learning knitting and sewing from her grandmother and mother. Christina’s understanding of design was further enhanced through her grandfather who was a furniture designer and maker in Italy. Christina also enjoys other forms of craft and will continue exploring different mediums to create functional everyday objects.
