Passionate about handcrafting, this husband and wife team hails from Hamilton Ontario and launched The Black & Tan Trading Co. (BATTCO) spring of 2014, exhibiting their product publicly for the first time at our first ever MKRS MRKT and offer hand stitched leather goods and custom metal fabrication. While LA works behind the scenes on the business, design, social media and marketing end, it is Pat who is the craftsman behind each stitch, each weld and the one who creates each custom piece for the company.
All leather for the BATTCO’s product is sourced locally, enabling them to offer a variety of tans for their most popular pieces: the BATTCO Moonshine Mug, Bi-Fold Wallet, Knife Sheath, Key Keeper, Passport Holder and other hand-stitched leatherwear and accessories like their Standard Belt, BATTCO Suspenders and Service Badge Holders.
A welder by trade, Pat began making furniture pieces for their own home – custom glass and stainless coffee tables, leather and metal bar stools – when word began to spread and the requests for pieces started to trickle in. Since then many different pieces have been created and installed in homes and businesses across Hamilton and the GTA.
The real craftsmanship in The Black and Tan Trading Co. can be seen in the details – custom items like handmade travel bags, personal knife and axe sheaths even custom coffee tables as well as leather and metal bar stools. If you can think of it, the Black & Tan Trading Co. wants to create it.
Both Pat and LA hope to one day spend all their time working on pieces for The Black & Tan Trading Co., but for now they use each spare minute outside spending time with their kids and their full time roles during the week – Pat in manufacturing and LA in the hospitality business – to devote to The Black & Tan Trading Co.
